Contains information pertaining to the following military units and organizations: U.S. Military Academy; Medical Corps. General description of the collection: The George D. DeShon papers include DeShon's memoir of military service (1890-1913) as instructor at the Hospital Corps Training School at Fort D.A. Russell and Washington Barracks, post surgeon at Fort Logan and Fort Douglas, instructor at the Army Medical School, surgeon of the 4th U.S. Infantry Regiment and the 11th U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, senior medical officer on Lawton's expedition from New York to Manila, Acting Medical Inspector of the VIII (8th) Corps, executive officer of the hospital ship Relief, executive officer of the Office of Chief Surgeon of the Department of Luzon, post surgeon at Fort Des Moines, commander of the Army and Navy General Hospital at Hot Springs, and commander of the San Francisco Medical Supply Depot. Much of his reminiscence focuses on service in the Philippines and China (1899-1903). Two reports of his operations during Lawton's voyage (January-March 1899) are included. Other items include: his report of instruction (1897-1898); his report as surgeon of U.S. troops in the Canal Zone concerning a permanent hospital there (apparently written in 1916); commissions, diplomas, and family genealogy from the 1650s to the 1950s; and a letter to his son from John J. Pershing in 1920 concerning the death of Colonel DeShon in 1917.
